How Long Does Hardwood Floor Installation Take?

How Long Does Hardwood Floor Installation Take?

TIMELINE

Each installation project is unique, but we’ve gathered some general rules that apply. Many factors go into determining the overall length of time for installation to be completed.

It is important to understand the level of impact hardwood flooring installation can potentially have on your day-to-day life. When installation involves several rooms within your home, it may even require you to relocate for a short period.

The amount of space, the level of complexity, and the condition of your home and sub-floor are all determining factors. The total time also depends on the material you choose to have installed. For example, solid hardwood flooring can take several more days than vinyl planks to get acclimated to the temperature and humidity in your home.

ACCLIMATION

If you don’t allow your flooring to properly acclimate before the installation, noticeable problems areas can develop hours or even days after the installation is done. Acclimation is crucial in protecting against cupping and gaps in your beautiful new flooring. The expansion and contraction may seem minimal to the average viewer, but proper acclimation will ensure you reap the full benefit of your new hardwood flooring. No matter which flooring type you choose, you will need to give the materials time to acclimate. The time for acclimation differs depending on the material.

Once the flooring is delivered to your home, the time until completion is roughly 10-15 days, this includes 7 days for acclimation and the rest for installation and finishing the floors. Unfinished, or site-finished hardwood flooring, typically takes the most time. Pre-finished hardwood floors will take less time compared to unfinished

The flooring installation itself normally takes 1 to 3 days. The majority of installations range from 1000 to 5000 square feet. A team consisting of 2 installers is typically able to complete 750 to 1000 square feet of flooring per day.

Factors That Influence The Time It Takes to Install Hardwood Floors

Reduced Installation Time

If your job scope is less than 1000 to 1500 square feet, the installation might take fewer days. Properties where the space is wide open and free of any obstacles will also take less time to complete. Homeowners that opt for prefinished or Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring experience quicker installation periods.

Increased Installation Time

The installation time depends a lot on the size of the job. Also, cabinets, fixtures and fireplaces often add to the installation time. If your staircase is within the scope of work, it may take a whole day to install hardwood or vinyl plank flooring there. Or if you’ve elected to have a specific pattern, such as Herringbone or Parquet, the installation could take 2 or 3 times the standard installation time. Also, the sub floor should be inspected properly in advance. Unexpected sub-flooring complications could lead to an additional 1 to 2 days.

WRAPPING UP

It’s custom! No two jobs are exactly the same, making it hard to pinpoint a precise timeframe until you’ve measured your square footage, selected a product and design, and then had your home’s sub-floor inspected. Remember to hire a professional installer and follow the proper timeline to ensure your floors have a long life in your home.
